A Brief Introduction To Tiverton Castle

Founded in 1106 by Henry I, Tiverton Castle was originally a motte-and-bailey structure that was expanded and fortified in the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries. By the late medieval period, it was an important seat of power in Devon, often associated with the Earls of Devon (the Courtenay family), who lived in the castle from 1293 to 1556.
In 1495, William Courtenay, 1st Earl of Devon, married Princess Katherine Plantagenet. Katherine was King Edward IV’s sixth daughter and Elizabeth of York’s sister, who became Queen of England after marrying Henry VII. This made Katherine the aunt of King Henry VIII. After William Courtenay’s imprisonment and death in 1511, Katherine lived as Dowager Countess of Devon. She spent her later years in Devon and passed away in 1527. Her tomb is in St. Peter’s Church, Tiverton, next to Tiverton Castle.
Today, the castle is privately owned and open to the public. Visitors can enjoy exhibitions in the castle, including a fine collection of Civil War arms and armour, as well as beautiful walled gardens. Accommodation is available within the Castle’s grounds.

The Castle offers three spacious, self-catering apartments for 2 to 4 guests, accessed via a turret door and a stunning seventeenth-century well staircase. Additional lodges for 4 to 6 guests are set within the castle grounds.
