Sudeley Castle Cottages, Winchcombe, Gloucestershire.

Recently, I had the opportunity to stay in one of the Sudeley Castle Cottages, just on the edge of Winchcombe in Gloucestershire. Although the cottages are modern, their proximity to Sudeley Castle makes them attractive to Tudor time travellers.

Of course, Sudeley Castle is one of the most popular destinations on any Tudor history lover’s travel itinerary – and for good reason. It is best known as Queen Katherine Parr’s final home and resting place. However, several giants of the Tudor age have graced its grounds and corridors, including Henry VIII, Anne Boleyn, Elizabeth I, Lady Jane Grey, Thomas Cromwell and Sir Thomas Seymour.

The history speaks for itself, but the castle is endowed with a romantic beauty all of its own. Embraced by the lush slopes of the surrounding Cotswold hills, Sudeley Castle is an enchanting place. The elegance of the parterre blossoming with horses and lavender in summer, the still coolness of the chapel, and the intimate warmth of Katherineโ€™s private closet will stay with you long after you have departed.
