Note: This is a show notes page accompanying my on-location podcast, recorded in spring 2025.

An Introduction to Hellens

Hellens Manor, nestled in the village of Much Marcle, Herefordshire, is one of Englandโ€™s oldest historic homes, with roots stretching back to 1057. Iโ€™ve had this incredible place on my must-visit list for ages, and it certainly didnโ€™t disappoint! With its rich history, fascinating artefacts and centuries of intriguing stories, Hellens is a true hidden gem. In this episode, I take you inside this remarkable manor to uncover its secrets and explore the lives of those who have called it home for over a thousand years.

During the Tudor period, Hellens Manor was owned by the Walwyn family, who were instrumental in shaping its development. The manor showcases a striking half-timbered facade and classic Tudor brickwork, while its beautifully preserved oak-panelled rooms offer a glimpse into the past. Among its many treasures are heirlooms linked to Anne Boleyn, with some artefacts said to have belonged to her. The interiors tell a story of evolving styles and generations, each leaving their mark on this historic home.

The gardens of Hellens are designed in Tudor style, featuring a yew labyrinth, a rare octagonal dovecote, a physic garden and a knot garden. The grounds also encompass ancient woodlands and wildflower meadows, offering picturesque views of the Malvern Hills.

Hellens Manor is open to the public, and visitors can explore the wealth of historical artefacts and the manor’s impressive art collection, including paintings by renowned artists including Gainsborough, Van Dyke and Goya. Guided tours are available, and the venue also hosts various cultural and educational events throughout the year, including concerts, workshops and a monthly produce market.

I’m joined by Sasha Giles, General Manager at Hellens as she tours me around the site, sharing stories of its incredible history. Below is a gallery of accompanying images taken during my on-location visit. You can listen to the podcast episode here or by clicking the button below:
