A Brief Introduction to Astley Castle

Astley Castle, located in the village of Astley in Warwickshire, has a history stretching back over a thousand years. The site has been occupied since Saxon times. It began as a fortified manor house and became a crenellated and moated castle in 1266 when it briefly changed hands before reverting to the Astleys.
By the fifteenth century, it was in the possession of the powerful Grey family. It was a garrison during the English Civil War and later requisitioned in World War II for convalescing servicemen; the dilapidated castle was repaired and became a hotel in the 1950s. Following a mysterious fire in 1978, Astley Castle was left in ruins.
In 2005, The Landmark Trust stepped in to save the site, undertaking an ambitious restoration project that was completed in 2012. This remarkable transformation turned the crumbling remains into a luxurious holiday accommodation, carefully preserving the castleโs historic character. The restoration seamlessly merged modern living spaces with the medieval stone structure, earning the project the prestigious RIBA Stirling Prize for architecture in 2013.
Now managed by The Landmark Trust, Astley Castle is a unique rental property that allows guests to enjoy modern comforts within a historic setting. The large windows provide scenic views of the Warwickshire countryside and the castleโs partially preserved moat.
