A Brief Introduction To Tudor Cottage

Dating back to around 1540, Tudor Cottage is an authentic thatched Tudor home, complete with striking period details. Set in an idyllic location near the River Frome and within easy reach of Dorchester, it offers a peaceful accommodation option in the Dorset countryside.

During the Tudor period, Dorset remained largely rural, but its abbeys, ports and market towns connected it closely to the wider events unfolding under the Tudor monarchs. One of the biggest changes came under Henry VIII during the Dissolution of the Monasteries. Powerful religious houses such as Cerne Abbey and Sherborne Abbey lost land and influence as monasteries were dismantled and their wealth redistributed to noble families loyal to the Crown. This transformed Dorsetโ€™s landscape and ownership patterns for generations.

Coastal towns in Dorset including Weymouth and nearby Melcombe Regis became important trading ports. Ships carried wool, cloth and other goods across the English Channel. Architecture from the Tudor period still survives throughout the county. Timber-framed houses, stone manor homes and thatched cottages can be found in villages and market towns across Dorset.
