Oxnead Hall, Norfolk
A Brief Introduction To Oxnead Hall
Oxnead has a rich history that stretches back to prehistoric times. Archaeological discoveries, including axe heads, knives, and spearheads, point to early human activity on the site. By the time of the Domesday Survey in 1086, the estate was owned by the Halden family. It later passed to Sir Robert de Salle in 1300s, and by the early 1400s, the influential Paston family had acquired it.
The Pastons, who lived at Oxnead from the 1400s to the1700s, left behind a remarkable legacy in the form of the Paston Letters. The Paston Letters are one of the most remarkable and important collections of personal correspondence from medieval England. They offer a rare and detailed glimpse into the lives of a wealthy gentry family. The collection consists of over 1,000 letters and documents written between c.1422 and 1509 by various members of the Paston family, their servants and associates. Over 1,000 letters from that period were found at Oxnead in 1735. The letters cover everyday matters as well as national political events, legal battles, marriage arrangements, estate management and family feuds.
Today, the estate is owned by the Aspinall family, who continue to preserve its unique heritage.
