A Brief Introduction to Hedingham Castle

Hedingham Castle, located in Essex, stands as a stunning and well-preserved example of Norman architecture. Built following traditional Norman military principles, many of its original elements, such as arched windows, a grand fireplace and a magnificent banqueting hall are still intact. During the Tudor period, Hedingham Castle welcomed prominent guests, including Henry VII, Henry VIII, and Elizabeth I.

Today, the castle is privately owned by descendants of the de Vere family, Jason and Demetra Lindsay. Since they inherited the estate over twenty years ago, they have transformed the castle, adjacent Georgian House, and gardens into a stunning wedding and events venue, with exclusive accommodation for overnight stays.

Stay At Hedingham Castle

Guests can choose from two beautifully appointed cottages set within the magnificent 160-acre grounds of Hedingham Castle. Within walking distance to village of Castle Hedingham, there are two pubs and a small selection of shops including a village store.

The Medieval Lodge offers accommodation for up to 17 guests across eight bedrooms. It’s perfect for a week or weekend stay, providing a unique setting for family gatherings or group retreats. The Garden Cottage provides a peaceful retreat with modern amenities. Suitable for two to four guests, it has a luxurious double bedroom, two single rooms, a drawing room and a fully equipped kitchen, including a terrace with stunning views.

Alternatively, guests can stay in The Royal Chamber. Situated atop the 900-year-old Norman keep, the Royal Chamber is the only modern bedroom inside such a structure in the country. This luxurious retreat features a grand four-poster and spacious bathroom. Guests staying here enjoy exclusive access to the entire castle during their stay.

The 1502 Progress: Coates / Cotes, Gloucestershire

Just as with Beverston, the mention of Cotes as a location on the 1502 progress is fleeting.

Coates is a parish about three miles west of Cirencester in Gloucestershire. During the medieval and Tudor periods, Cirencester was a thriving wool town. Henry had visited Cirencester before, on at least one occasion. The choice of Cotes Place as a lodging for the royal party may have meant that the King could rekindle acquaintances with the wool merchants of the nearby town.

The 1502 Progress: Woolaston, Gloucestershire

On 28 August, the Queen’s Chamber Books for Elizabeth of York records, ‘Itm the same day to the mariners that conveyed the Quenes grace over the Severn besides Chepstowe’. The temptation is to immediately conclude that a ferry conducted the King and Queen across the River Severn into England at the point where the current bridge spans the river, close to the foot of Chepstow Castle, where the royal couple had been lodged. While this might be true, further close inspection of a later entry in the Chamber Book (dated 27 September) clarifies that the Queen moved from Chepstow to ‘Walstone’ before arriving at the next stop: Berkeley Castle.

This entry is a retrospective payment made to ‘Robert Alyn for his costes prepayring logging for the Quene from Ragland to Chepstowe by the space of twoo dayes, from Chepstowe to Walstone, ij dayes, from Walstone to Berkeley, ij dayes.’…

The Mary Rose Museum is an incredible time capsule, a window onto everyday Tudor life as much as it is England’s Tudor naval history. For when the ship sank, its contents were covered in layers of silt, progressively encasing the wreck. This acted to keep around 40 % of the hull and thousands of artefacts in a fabulous state of preservation. Thus, we are left with a snapshot of the sixteenth century, giving us unique access to the ordinary and extraordinary objects of Tudor life in a way that you will not see elsewhere.
